CityLife | Spotlight on Devon, Model/Dietitian/Traveler

Have you ever wondered about the life of models on the fashion runway? What do they do with their time? How do they always look amazing? We are excited to share some of these secrets in this interview! Introducing model/dietitian/traveler Devon Guy IG @devoneguy one of my favorite girls for advice on fashion, travel, and staying healthy.  Devon and I crossed paths in Seoul, Korea a few years back and met through the Seoul Girl Gone International community network.  I could go on and on about how inspiring she is, but it’s better for you to find out for yourself!

1. YOUR FULL NAME AND LOCATION.

Devon Guy.  Lived in Seoul, South Korea. Currently living in Calgary, Canada.

2. Where are you from? What do you do? And how did you meet DGal?

I’m from Calgary, Canada.  I have two jobs: I work as a model and a dietitian.

Modeling involves print work for local magazines, clothing companies and shopping malls; runway shows; product promotion on TV and other editorial photo projects.

My nutrition job involves one on one counseling, community health promotion and cooking classes with adults and children with the goal of preventing chronic disease.

I also love to travel and met DGal while living in Seoul, Korea.  I have traveled to 35 countries so far and hope to reach 50 before I turn 40! (Just to name a few, I’ve been to many countries but the ones that stand out would be: Philippines, Vietnam, Japan, China, South Korea, Tanzania, Rwanda, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, Italy, France, Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Spain…)

One thing I’d like to share is that I only spent a week in Dubai but have been to other muslim areas like Turkey, Morocco and Zanzibar. There are definitely misconceptions and generalizations when it comes to women travelers in the Middle East. I found I felt most comfortable when dressing conservatively and keeping a sort of humble attitude. I think it’s best for women to stay alert but carry a sort of detachment and ignore stares. Always respect social mores and when possible interact with local women. In Dubai, I arrived at the airport and was offered a ladies only taxi. I was surprised they even existed but felt comfortable, especially having just arrived and not knowing what to expetrct. Always respect the local dress and culture so not to attract unwanted attention. I felt best when my knees and shoulders covered but didn’t feel i had to dress more conservatively than that. Always carry an extra shawl or scarf in your handbag so you can be ready to cover your head when going into a mosque or other place of worship.

3. What inspires you to do what you do? Do you have any recommendations for others who aspire to do the same?

I have always been passionate about health and fitness.  I love food and so I pursued my education in nutrition.

I have worked in the fashion industry for over 16 years.  I love fashion, art and travel.  It allows me to be creative, see new places, work with talented people and of course, wear beautiful clothes!

I first moved overseas when I was 16 to work as a model in Milan, Italy.  Since then I take any opportunity I can to travel, whether its for work or pleasure or to visit friends.

4. Do you have any advice for those who want to travel and pursue their dreams abroad?

I would say to take the risk.  Know that it isn’t going to be easy but that you have to put yourself out of your comfort zone to gain new experiences.  Don’t stress too much about the little things and know that there is always a home to go back to if things don’t work out.  Living overseas will teach you more about life, about yourself and others than you can learn anywhere else.  Try new foods, learn new languages and see new places.  Do it while you’re young, don’t wait too long!

5. When you’re not taking photo shoots what do you do in your down time?

When not working or shooting I love me time.  I also make yoga and fitness a priority.  Staying fit keeps my body and mind in a happy place.  I spend time with friends and family and try out new restaurants and hot places in the city.  I also spend lots of time in the mountains.  Hiking to the top and taking in beautiful views brings me a sense of peace and helps me keep life stressors in perspective.

6. Share a fashion and beauty tip.

Fashion tip: I love layering.   Take risks, use clothes as an expression of yourself and your creativity.  I try to go for comfort and basic (fave jeans and a Tee) and use scarves and accessories to glam it up.

Beauty tip: Beauty from the inside out.  Treat your body well.  Stay active and be strong.  Get lots of sleep, drink lots of water and eat mostly a plant-based diet.

7. How would you recommend young women explore various career interests?

I would recommend following your passions.  Know that there are many options and opportunities out there so keep an open mind.  If you start something that isn’t a good fit, don’t be afraid to leave it for something different.  The world is getting smaller; seek out international opportunities when you can.  Find a mentor who can help guide you and share from their experience.
