INTERVIEW WITH EXPAT MC LUCID FROM THE UK LIVING IN SEOUL

It’s fun to meet new people living abroad.  Not only those fond of coffee chats and happy hour beers, but also those committed-to-what-they-love-to-do types.  Even if they don’t know the language or are too far from home and battling with homesickness, their passion doesn’t seem to  hibernate – so, meet MC Lucid vocalist super cool cat, and yes, what a hottie!  If you disagree, you’ll dig the tone of his sultry sexy voice, like a true MC with his DJ.

He tells us all about his own personal style and his trails Drum and Bass-ing all over Seoul – so keep reading below and check out his performance style along with a peek at his preppy side when he’s not MC-ing.

WHEN DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN DRUM AND BASS MUSIC?

I became seriously interested in DnB about 5 years ago. Up until then I was more into UK Garage as that was the music that I was really into as a teenager. It was also the first music I went clubbing to and tried my hand at emceeing to as well. But now it’s naturally evolved into a love for DnB, which is the pinnacle of Break-beat music.

WHY IS DRUM AND BASS AWESOME?

Ha ha, well, you are right, it is!  For me it’s pure adrenaline. A lot of people seem to think it’s strictly dance music, but  there are so many flavors from chilled-out to hardcore jump-up. But unlike other sub-genres like Dubstep and Electro the music has soul. DnB has stood the test of time, it’s no passing fad like Trap (whatever the h@#*k that is!).

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE DRUM & BASS DJs?

The deejays that play to the crowd and not to themselves! Ha ha.. And those that play tunes that no one else has, like unreleased stuff. I mean, if we are talking strictly ‘deejays’ and not ‘producers’, then Andy C is probably the best live DJ I have seen. I actually had the opportunity to MC with him when he came to Seoul last year, which was definitely one of the highlights of my career.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR GIGs AND EVERYDAY LIFE IN SEOUL?

Who said I’ve got it balanced! I’m hanging in there. Look, if I could do this full-time I would, but to live your entire existence inside a club is a bit unrealistic, there has to be a come-down at some point. So yeah, there is a day job sandwiched in between there, which I’m trying not to let conflict with my weekends too much.

THE DRUM AND BASS SCENE IS….?

In a word, ‘underground’. Especially here in Seoul. DnB has garnered mainstream exposure in the UK but it’s still a small movement in Korea. The DnB community here in Seoul is really tight though, and people come for the music, straight up, there is none of the pretentiousness that you get with other forms of dance music. You’ve only got to go to some of the super clubs in Gangnam to know what I mean by pretentiousness.

DESCRIBE YOUR OWN PERSONAL STYLE.

Well, when I’m on the mic I tend to sweat like the proverbial peodophile in a playground so if i’m not wearing a black or whtie t-shirt then it looks like I took a shower with my clothes on. Outside of the club, I suppose my style is quite varied. I don’t like wearing stuff other people have so I try and shop vintage or more often than not head to the cheap Korean boutiques for unique items. But ultimately I like to be comfortable and I can’t justify spending a lot of money on clothes so those are the 2 criteria I try to satisfy when thinking about an outfit.

HOW WOULD YOU COMPARE FASHION IN SEOUL TO YOUR COUNTRY?

I think there’s less distinction here between the sexes. Blokes in Seoul are quite androgynous and it’s not uncommon to see hetrosexual men wearing make-up, carrying man bags and other accessories. Try that in England and, well, let’s just say ‘good luck’ to you. Also, the concept of ‘couple’ fashion hasn’t quite caught on yet in the UK, and actually I’m not sure it ever will. Also, whereas the thrift shops in the Britain are cheap, in Korea I find the items are usually overpriced and you’re less likely to find something really unusual as well.
