Interview with Fashion Designer in Seoul @LunaLiaLingerie

DGal starts 2016 with Caroline from Birmingham, Alabama living in Seoul, South Korea. She is bringing hot stuff to Seoul (literally). 1.YOUR FULL NAME AND LOCATION.

2. WHEN AND WHY DID YOU GET INTERESTED IN DESIGNING LINGERIE?

“I have always been into fashion and design and growing up in Birmingham, Alabama I could never really find the styles I liked from movies, magazines, and still to this day, ideas for designs I think of in my mind. I became interested in lingerie design when I had to make a corset in one of my classes in college. For a while I was doing graphic design but my interest was revisited when I moved to Seoul and most of the lingerie I saw was just overly frilly, covered in rhinestones or just too basic looking for my taste. I also kept seeing these gorgeous laces at the fabric market and I could just visualize them looking fabulous as a trim or detail for some skivvies.”

3. DGAL REACHES OUT TO BUDGET CHIC FASHIONISTAS. WILL THERE BE ANY DESIGNS FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T AFFORD $100 BRALETTE?

“There are some on the website that are under $100. Luna Lia is a luxury lingerie brand with limited runs for each design, the garments are made with high quality fabrics and trims, put together with care and not in some mass produced factory. The cost reflects the quality and respect to the people involved in the creation that deserve to be compensated fairly. As far as luxury lingerie goes, Luna Lia is actually at the budget end of that scale.”

4. WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE LINGERIE DESIGNERS?

“There are many other lingerie designers that I admire but at the moment I am loving Brogan Kate, Tisja Damen and the brand For Love and Lemons.”

5. HOW IS IT DESIGNING IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY THAT DOESN’T SPEAK ENGLISH? WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY LIKE?

“It isn’t easy but I’ve learned enough Korean to communicate and get what I need at the fabric market and whatnot. My days often consist of me waking up and going to the fabric market around 10am, looking for a trim or fabric that catches my eye and I think could be made into a gorgeous design that would fit with Luna Lia’s aesthetic. After getting fatigued from all the constant people bumping into me and the chaos inside the fabric market, I’ll usually get lunch at this really good Korean soup place nearby and eat a shit load of kimchi to get my pro-biotics on. Then I’ll go home, ideally I’ll organize all my receipts and business cards so I’ll know where to go to get more of the trims when I run out in the future. Next, I’ll start playing around with the fabrics and laces on my mannequin, ie. draping and seeing what designs I come up with. I’ll make a sample and then later I’ll take some pics of it on a model and put it up on www.lunalialingerie.com.”

6. DO YOU FEEL BRALETTES WOULD SUITE THE KOREAN MARKET? IF SO, WHY?

“I think Luna Lia Lingerie suits just about any market. Who doesn’t love lacy little things that make you look like Venus incarnate?

7. DESCRIBE YOUR OWN PERSONAL FASHION STYLE.

“I think I can be all over the board depending on how I’m feeling. I definitely enjoy a kind of boho-chic vibe or just garments that have some kind of unique detail. I also live in skinny jeans most of the time.”

8. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE LINGERIE SCENE IN SEOUL?

“Pushup bras, padded underwear, matching couples underwear.. to point out some of the things that have stood out. They also have wonderbra and some other brands you’d find in the the west but nothing really similar to Luna Lia Lingerie.”
